I’m taking a Lyft home from the airport since I came back early due to getting super-super sick. I’m worried I might not make it home. From the way the car shudders when braking, I think the rotors are warped, and the dash has the TPMS light and the check engine light on.

Kinja'd!!!

Update: made it home. I mentioned the rotors and the CEL to the guy when I was getting out, and he said “thanks” in a way that suggested he wasn’t going to do anything about it.

Report them to Lyft. They’re supposed to have to keep their car in good working order. Tell them what you saw and they should make the driver take it in to get recertified to be a Lyft within X number of days.

Ooooh, did they also camp in the left lane with their brights on the whole way? But yes, please report them.

I hope you feel better soon, glad you’re at least home to recover.

Thanks, me too

I did report them. This is probably not quite as bad as the one driver I had who was watching a movie on his phone while driving, but still sketchy AF.

Glad you’re safe

And the poorly maintained car is a consequence of the stupid gig economy. People can’t afford to take care of their cars.

A regular taxi wouldn’ t be any better or worse in terms of upkeep of the cars or the drivers’ pay.

Eh, t he TPMS light is pretty insignificant. Mine has been on since I bought my car. It’s a bad sensor, but I know to keep an eye on tire pressure since literally every other vehicle I’ve owned didn’t have a TPMS.

Yeah, the TPMS light alone wouldn’t concern me.

I don’t feel good reporting the guy, since life for a gig economy worker is not easy. But everybody should be able to expect their ride share vehicle to be reasonably well-maintained.

Why I like the U.K. and taxis. Vehicles are inspected every year, taxis are inspected every six months.

UK taxis are definitely superior to ours. Also UK vehicle inspections. In the US though Uber/Lyft cars are usually cleaner, more comfortable, arrive faster, and usually cost less than a cab. I’d say the Uber/Lyft drivers I’ve used are on average superior drivers, but there are definitely some who shouldn’t have a license, let alone be allowed to ferry around other people.

I t’s not sketchy, it’s disruptive! Municipalities used to regulate gypsy cabs (by arresting the drivers) but now they don’t any more, so instead you get to hope that a for-profit corporation will regulate the industry. Hopefully there’s not a guy at Lyft like the Ed Norton character in Fight Club, running the numbers on what it might cost to just let the occasional rider die in a crash vs. what kinda cash they can pull down ignoring that kind of stuff until someone DOES die.

This is why you don’t run a government like a business :)

At first I thought “Hey, I work nearby and I get off around tat time, I could have given you a ride!” Then I saw the part about you being sick... I don’t want none!

Glad you got home a-okay, and I’m glad our state has valuable inspection stations to ensure there aren’t dangerous, poorly maintained cars on the road. What’s that? They just take $20 and plug in an OBD scanner to check for codes? That’s it? Surely they at least make sure lights are functio- no? Hmm...

I was in one last week that I thought the rear wheels were going to fall off. The wheel bearings did not sound happy.

Opposresidentlexusguy and I were 0/2 on Uber’s when we hung out in Nashville. The first Altima had brakes so bad I’m surprised it stopped at all. I’ve never heard brakes squeal that much. The fusion on the way home couldn’t go faster than 55 on the highway from what I assume was a bearing or axle and I believe also had a CEL. They’re definitely hit or miss anymore. When I first started using a few years ago, they always seemed to be nice cars though.

How does that get enforced? Do they have to send in a copy of their receipts ?

Glad you made it! I've don't think I've been in a properly working Uber/ Lyft in a few years. At the very least they all have check engine lights.  The worst was a Jeep whose wheel bearing was roaring at speed.  Legitimately though about having her drop me off early and taking another.
